Can You Switch Medicare Supplement Plans Anytime in Washington?

By Michael Gurr · Published 2026-04-30 · Updated 2026-04-30

This is one of the biggest misconceptions I hear: "Once I pick a Medicare Supplement plan, I'm stuck with it forever." That's not true — and in Washington especially, you have more flexibility than most states.

Can you actually switch plans?

In Washington State, you can move from one Medicare Supplement plan to another at any time of year. There's no "open enrollment" you have to wait for.

👉 And here's the key: if you're moving from one Plan N to another Plan N (same coverage), you do NOT have to health-qualify.

Same letter to same letter. No medical questions. No underwriting in most cases.

A real example

I recently sat down with someone who already had a Plan N through United. They had talked to a SHIBA rep and found a cheaper option through another company.

We reviewed everything together:

They switched — and saved over $50 a month.

👉 Same exact coverage. Just less expensive.

Why do prices vary so much?

This part confuses people a lot. They think, "If it's cheaper, the coverage must be worse."

Not with supplements.

👉 Supplement coverage is standardized by the federal government. A Plan N is a Plan N no matter the carrier.

The reason prices vary comes down to:

When would you need to health-qualify?

You may need to answer health questions if:

If you're healthy, that's usually not an issue. If there have been some health changes, that's something we'd want to look at carefully before applying anywhere new — because once you're declined, it's harder to fix later.

Final thought

A lot of people overpay every month simply because they think they're stuck. In reality, you may have options to lower your premium without changing your coverage at all.

If you'd like, I can take a quick look at the plan you have now and see if there's a better-priced version of the same coverage out there. No cost, no obligation — just clarity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch Medicare Supplement plans anytime in Washington State?
Yes. Washington is one of a handful of states that gives Medicare Supplement enrollees guaranteed-issue rights to switch plans at any time of year. You do not need a special enrollment period. You cannot be denied or charged more based on health conditions when switching.
Will I have to answer health questions to switch Medicare Supplement plans in Washington?
Not if you are already enrolled in a Medicare Supplement plan. Washington law prevents insurers from using medical underwriting when you switch from one Medigap plan to another. This protection applies year-round.
Can I switch from Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement plan in Washington?
Switching from Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement plan is more complex. You must return to Original Medicare first, and depending on how long you have been on Medicare Advantage, you may need to pass medical underwriting. Contact Michael Gurr to review your specific situation before making this move.
Is there a best time of year to switch Medicare Supplement plans in Washington?
No. Because Washington gives year-round guaranteed switching rights, there is no strategic best time. Switch whenever it makes financial sense — typically when you find a lower premium with the same coverage, or when your carrier raises rates significantly.
