Can You Switch Medicare Supplement Plans Anytime in Washington?
This is one of the biggest misconceptions I hear: "Once I pick a Medicare Supplement plan, I'm stuck with it forever." That's not true — and in Washington especially, you have more flexibility than most states.
Can you actually switch plans?
In Washington State, you can move from one Medicare Supplement plan to another at any time of year. There's no "open enrollment" you have to wait for.
👉 And here's the key: if you're moving from one Plan N to another Plan N (same coverage), you do NOT have to health-qualify.
Same letter to same letter. No medical questions. No underwriting in most cases.
A real example
I recently sat down with someone who already had a Plan N through United. They had talked to a SHIBA rep and found a cheaper option through another company.
We reviewed everything together:
- Same coverage
- Same benefits
- Just a lower monthly premium
They switched — and saved over $50 a month.
👉 Same exact coverage. Just less expensive.
Why do prices vary so much?
This part confuses people a lot. They think, "If it's cheaper, the coverage must be worse."
Not with supplements.
👉 Supplement coverage is standardized by the federal government. A Plan N is a Plan N no matter the carrier.
The reason prices vary comes down to:
- How the company prices their plan to begin with
- How often (and how much) they raise rates over time
- How strict their underwriting is for new applicants
When would you need to health-qualify?
You may need to answer health questions if:
- You're moving to a richer plan (for example, Plan N → Plan G)
- You're outside a protected or guaranteed-issue situation
If you're healthy, that's usually not an issue. If there have been some health changes, that's something we'd want to look at carefully before applying anywhere new — because once you're declined, it's harder to fix later.
Final thought
A lot of people overpay every month simply because they think they're stuck. In reality, you may have options to lower your premium without changing your coverage at all.
If you'd like, I can take a quick look at the plan you have now and see if there's a better-priced version of the same coverage out there. No cost, no pressure — just clarity.
